Alright, i need to get this off my chest.
I love superheros. i love the idea of someone super-human. a demigod, able to control power beyond a human comprehension.
theres many heroes i find quite special in their ability; some of them akin more to a true God than a mortal. for example: Superman. Superman is the oldest superhero, whose comic dates back to world war 1. a profound ability is his, super speed, strength. the Man of steel. wonderful story, full of drama ranging from love to anger to despair, the full monty of emotions. a truly well written piece of fiction.
and yes, in a thread titled Marvel, i just opened with DC. because F*** you.
theres a host of great demi gods in Marvel; Thor is a prime example. Thor is the son of Odin, one of the greatest works of Mythological culture of the Vikings. he again has some potent abilities; but most of the time he's flailing his fists punching badguys to a pulp...
maybe we can find a demigod with something other than uncanny punching ability? hmmm.... wolverine? punching with blades. Cyclops? I don't always punch bad guys in the face, except most of the time i do, and then use my Laser vision only when its about to be disabled by someone who punched my helmet off.
maybe Hulk? well hulk i can excuse, because hulk's power is his immense punching ability. he was written that way without any other powerful backstory.
Spiderman? punching. Iron Man? Captain America? Transformers? punching, punching, and robots punching robots.
who the actual fuc|< decided the main art of combat in every superhero story would be unarmed mano-a-mano fisticuffs?
its ridiculous. even the villains who typically arm themselves with mega weapons of doom end up pounding the ground.
this is NOT (i repeat) ***NOT*** how a superhero or demigod or even full fledged GOD should save humanity.
you're Dr. Manhattan for Chrissakes, in a split second turn that supermonster beneath the city into snowflakes...
dammit.
i could deficate a better story than that, and yes that's coming from yet another guy who spent his writing RP dramas in fisticuffs. a tall order, and a bold accusation indeed. but i mean it.
these superhero tales are become cookie cutter and these gingerbreadmen are become stale and unappetizing, lacking any real flavour.
true to life Villains sometimes arent so obscene. real Crime isn't so organized. Heroism therefores should also be subtle and complex. Deity, if it has any role to play, should play out like in Constantine; either stand the heck back, or be a full fledged participant, but don't stand there preaching your power when all you brought to the table is a pair of knuckle sanguiches.
the watchmen was the only story with any actual believable Deity and ending aside, had a great narrative. dark story, but still a believable God in Dr. Manhattan and great chain of events with no cheesy overdone plots. it emphasized the Human in SuperHuman and made their costumed heroes less Godly than typical Comic books do, and that made them both more believable and Dr. Manhattan that much more of an actual super person, even if he did land on the Neutral side of the spectrum.
if Marvel actually utilized Armageddon (the villain) to his written potential, he'd be an unstoppable (even by Marvel standards) force in the domination of Earth, instead he dukes it out and upon bloody nose retreats into hiding. wth is that?
DC was no better; they actually gave Super Man a known weakness. the only actual demi-deity in the universe, a weakness to rocks.
DC, is you even trying? none of this is believable anymore and these heroes are barely heroes at all. any being with more than 3 fists might be able to dominate our species, given no superhero would have an equal amount of limbs to ward it off...
I'm going to go work on my story. i make no apologies.
