So from today on, it seems all NCSoft's L2 updates will be done through Pando Media Booster.
For those that aren't familiar with it, Pando is a Peer-to-peer 'booster' that is supposed to help with download speeds. While sometimes it DOES help, it also might consume your bandwidth until the point that you might experience latency in games or reduced download speeds.
Since they haven't really given us an OPTION to use Pando or not, we're forced to have that terrible piece of software down our throat. Now, for those that are more tech-friendly, they might have run into Pando before, but for those that are not, it may be very hard to find the configuration for the damn thing.
Which is why I'm posting this post.
Once you launch the NCSoft Launcher to update a game, it will remain working on the background and you don't even know it, as it won't be anywhere but in your processes. And in that way, you will be seeding YOUR bandwidth to seed other people's updates. Now... while most internet providers have enough upload speeds to compensate for that, people like me (with download/upload limits on one of the internet I use, and a slow upload speed on the other), would end up having a GREAT bit of trouble with that.
So you want to check how much bandwidth Pando's using or even turn it off without having to do ctrl + alt + del and forcefully closing it from the task manager, you will have to do this (And I'm talking about Vista/7 users. I don't know how to make this work on XP because I haven't had Pando with XP before).
Go on your Control Panel. You will NOT find anything for Pando there readily clickable (at least I haven't managed to find it unless doing this).
Type "Pando" on the search, and then the options for Pando Media Booster will appear. There will be a few options there, like "Start it when windows start" (which I would always have unclicked myself).
Then on Advanced Connection Settings, you can limit your upload speeds there. Now remember, however, that there might be a difference in your own dowload speed if you put those values too low.
But the most important part is the shutdown button. I would advise that if you have a slow upload speed or limits on your internet (or if you just don't want random people stealing your bandwidth while you're gaming or something), that you shut it down SOON as you're done updating.
I wish we had a choice, because PMB has got to be one of the worst download 'aids' I've ever experienced in my life. Luckily I was aware of it because Turbine uses it for their games, and playing LOTRO for a while made me know about PMB.
Hope that helps!
Edit: You can also uninstall it soon as you're done with the updates. But make sure to shut it down first before you try to uninstall it. The only problem is that once a week you WILL have to install it again if there are any client updates...
