Laying in the protective circle of Dachande's arms, sleep still taunted her. Dim fingers of a gray dawn crept around the window fame as she contemplated her position.
This was certainly not what she had intended nor expected when she fled the overbearing protectiveness of her Father and Brothers. She was certain they were looking for her by now. It had been months, longer than she had ever been gone before. And Daddy was always worried and angry if she was gone for more than a few days. Until now, she'd been confident at avoiding detection. Coming first to the "Main Land", and then moving deep into the interior, keeping a low profile and observing. Finding the Dark Avenger had changed that. The knight of Gran Kain had swept her up in his wake and she had followed willingly... right into slavery. The Lily brand on her wrist itched when she thought about it. At first, she thought it a small price to pay to be near Dachande and to aid him. Now it chafed more than ever. Being stationary was making her uneasy. While the Lilies may not be visible, the Echoes were, and each day she was unable to move was increasing her chances of being found by her family. If they found her, there would be a war. And not the war she hoped for. Daddy would never understand, nor would her brothers. All so cohesive and military minded. They would all follow in their Father's footsteps and maybe succeed in increasing rank where he had not. Still, as a prominent General, his field tactics were renowned among their people. He would use this to his full potential should he learn his only daughter and youngest child was not only the mate of a Human Knight... but a slave to a Priestess of Shilen. And no matter what shine the Celebrant and Dachande put on the circumstance, a slave she was.
Rose dawn slipped over the window sill and a loud knock resounded on the door. Her stomach tightened in a knot of fear and apprehension. The time had come for their punishment. She would take the lashes, though she was afraid, having never been struck in discipline in her young life. But more than the fer of pain, was the horror she would have to withstand as she watched her love take his own lashes. Two hundred and forty lashes he would take. And she would watch. If he was strong enough to take them, she was strong enough to watch.
She rose and dressed hurriedly as Dachande did the same. One thing was very clear to her now, she was going to have to play by their rules if she and Dachande were to get through this. She would have to ask and even plead. Follow orders and show respect. Perhaps, if she did not stir the fire, she would run less risk of discovery by those who sought her. The thought of the Scouts sent out and one if not all over her brothers scouring the known lads for her brought a chill to her blood. No. They wouldn't understand. Turning, the young Kamael followed the guards as they lead her into the next phase of her life.
