As Ceywin sat, exhausted, upon the hill looking over the town of Oren, she thought back to how she came to be in this situation...
"You know what is expected of you. You can't just leave," her father said, as always in that calm voice of his.
"I won't marry him," Ceywin replied while she finished packing
the last of her belongings into the pack on her bed.
"This has been arranged since just after you were born. I can't
allow you to abandon your duty just because you don't like the way he looks," he said as he stepped up behind her.
"It's not the way he looks!" she shouted, spinning to face her father. "I refuse to follow a path that I had no say in!"
Ceywin glanced back at her village as she walked down the path leading west, away from the village, and toward the rest of the world with which she was unfamiliar. She sighed as she saw her mother wave goodbye... Her father was nowhere in sight. Waving back to her mother, she turned back to the path before her, lifting her head and adjusting the pack upon her back. "I choose my own destiny," she whispered. Increasing her pace, she forced herself not to look back to where her mother stood sadly watching her only daughter walk away.
Carefully making her way across a field, Ceywin kept watch for orcs. While passing through the overwhelming town of Giran she had heard that this area north of town was claimed by a tribe of orcs following a leader named Breka, and that some of them were especially savage. As she went along without any confrontations, she became more relaxed and began to believe that the stories had been exaggerated. Suddenly, as she passed a boulder, she caught a glimpse of something green flying towards her. The impact caused her to stumble and fall, disorienting her for a moment. She rolled over and saw a large orc walking toward her, grunting and laughing to himself. He seemed quite pleased that he had caught himself an elf, and Ceywin began to worry what he intended to do to her.
As she gripped her staff, she reached into her pack to grab some spirit shots her mother had given her before she left home. Before she could apply the shots to her staff, she saw a green blur blindside the orc with a flash of blue light. A few more blue flashes later, the orc was lying dead on the ground and a well-muscled female orc stood looking down on her as she lay on the ground.
"Hmm... What have we here?" the female orc asked rhetorically. "Seems I have an elf that doesn't know where she is... What should I do about this?" The female orc crouched down, never taking her eyes off of Ceywin. Ceywin quickly brought herself from lying on the ground reaching for her pack to a crouched position matching the orcs.
"Oho!" exclaimed the orc, surprised with the elf's swiftness. "We've caught a fast one! Where was all that speed when that Overlord was about to kill you and take you home for dinner?"
"I don't know what you're saying! What do you want?" Ceywin asked, not understanding orcish. "Do you speak human?" she asked, switching to the language she'd had to learn during her travels through human lands.
The orc, finally recognizing something this puny looking creature in front of her was saying switched to the human language she had learned a bit of. "Me...." the orc struggled with the unfamiliar language, "talk... human... some."
"My name is Ceywin. I just want to pass through this area to see what's beyond it. Why did you help me? Will you leave me alone?" Ceywin asked.
The orc's brow creased as she tried to translate what the elf had said. "Me... I..." she struggled as she understood parts of what the elf had said. "I kill... bad orc... betray... home. You elf. You... weak. Not know orc. You... die." As the orc stepped toward her, Ceywin saw an arrow impact the orcs side. She looked over and saw a shorter, squatter orc with a bow drawing back with another arrow aimed toward the orc in front of her. Since the orc had saved her, she felt an obligation to return the favor, even though the orc had just threatened her. She dove her hand into her pack and pulled out three of the spirit shots her mother had given her. Slapping the hand with the shots in it against her staff, she felt the hum of power vibrate through it and knew that her mother's gift was a special one. She chanted the incantation to the solar attack she had heard about as she passed through one of the villages on her journey and felt power rushing down her arms, through her staff and expanding through the air until she felt a bolt of electricity slam into the orc with the bow. As it fell to the ground dead, Ceywin sat with a look of shock on her face until she heard the female orc groaning with pain. Looking toward the sound, she saw the orc lying on the ground with the arrow shaft protruding from her side. She crawled to the orc and whispered to her, "Shhhh this will hurt, but it's necessary..." while she gripped the shaft of the arrow. With a quick tug the arrow came free with a grunt of pain from the orc.
With her arms still tingling with the power that had rushed through them, Ceywin built a small fire near the injured orc as darkness began to fall. She dug through her pack and found some bandages and applied them to the orcs wound. Digging deeper in her pack, she found some bottles of a red liquid that she knew she hadn't packed. They were marked 'Healing Potion' and she knew her mother must have added them to her supplies when she wasn't paying attention. With some effort, Ceywin got the orc to drink one of the bottles of liquid, which seemed to have a marked improvement on her healing abilities, as well as her ability to use foul language. Though Ceywin didn't understand Orcish, the tone of the words interspersing the orc's human dialogue left no doubt as to what the intention of the words were, even if the meaning were not clear. As the night drug on, the orc seemed to move into a better mood.
By morning, she might have almost been considered chipper.
"You save orc life! You be orc... friend!"
"Well, you did save my life first..." Ceywin replied.
"No matter! You have orc... debt. Me help you till orc debt
repaid!" It was obvious that the orc would not take no for an answer, so Ceywin resolved herself to having the orc follow her around. Though, she realized it might not be such a bad thing to have a tough orc around in case things came up on her journey that she couldn't handle alone.
And so began the relationship of Ceywin and Komeri, Elf and Orc... Who would come to be best friends, learning parts of each other's peoples philosophy's and finding a mixture of both that they could both agree on and were happy enough to follow, strange as it may be... An elf following some orcish tenets, and an orc following some elvish ones... A team that took the strength of two peoples and meshed them into one.
As the recollection faded, Ceywin looked over to Komeri sitting next to her. "So," she said. "Looks like we're surrounded... What should we do about this?" Komeri grinned at her while hefting her shiny fist weapons which then flashed bright silver as she applied a soulshot.
"I think we've got some killing to do," Komeri replied as they both stood up and Ceywin gripped the hilt of her dangerously over-enchanted mystic sword.
"I've never been one to argue with you Ko..." Ceywin said with a smile as they both turned their gaze down the slope toward the monsters surrounding the town of Oren.
They begin to trot down hill, which becomes a run as electric sparks start to dance over Ceywin's body and Komeri's form starts to dance with the shadows of the power of her gods...
The monsters don't stand a chance....
