She spun around quickly, and her dagger successfully met the throat of another unsuspecting wyrm. Blood dripped down her arm as she consistently slashed about. Her armor, once a brilliant blue and silver, was now streaked with red. This was too easy, these beasts no longer presented a challenge, but this was the safest way...for herself and for others. After the ground was littered with corpses and the grass painted with red, she finally collapsed to the ground in exhaustion. She lay down her dagger and shield and began removing her gloves. As she leaned against a massive piece of dead wood, she gazed up into the sky. The heavens were sprinkled with many tiny orbs of brilliant light. They seemed to dance around the full moon. She could feel the tears coming, a massive lump began to rise in the back of her throat. And without hesitation, or her shield, she stood up and fatally struck the road scavenger sneaking up behind her. The beast slid down in front of her. She could feel the life running out of the wound in his neck. She wiped the blood off her weapon and stared down at the creature, feeling nothing. "This is what I was trained to do", she kept telling herself, "this is who I am, who Shilen wants me to become." The dark elf picked up her shield and made her way back to town. She no longer posed a threat to herself or anyone else, she had released her anger. She could finally rest peacefully...for the night.
***"Vedette! Come dear, your father went this way," Armelle called after her daughter. Vedette came scurrying up the path, she wasn't the most graceful dark elf, but her mother loved her more than anything. "Go ahead and see if you can find him, I bet he's already at the fishing hole". She watched as her daughter playfully peered behind each massive tree. She knew her husband was going to try and scare their daughter, but it was a game they loved to play. "Boo!," Kendyll jumped out and scooped his little girl into his massive arms and kissed her forehead at least ten times. "Come on, I saved a special spot for you right beside me," he said. "Daddy, do you think I'll catch more than just the ugly fish this time?" Kendyll laughed and knelt down so he was face to face with Vedette, "Sweetheart, I gurantee it." Armelle watched as the two held hands and continued down to their favorite fishing spot. Kendyll looked back at his beautiful wife and thought to himself, "How did I ever get this lucky? Nothing could possibly ruin this day."
The family was having little luck with their fishing, but they were throughly enjoying each other's company. Vedette had, of course, jumped into the semi-shallow pool and was enjoying the cool water. Armelle and Kendyll laughed and watched as their daughter continued to put on a show. The sun was beginning to set and the family was preparing to leave. Armelle got a head start from her husband, she wanted to let him spend some quality time with his daughter. As Kendyll was scooping up his daughter out of the water, he heard his wife scream. He looked up and saw swirls of bright red smoke winding through the trees. "Vedette, stay here, I'll be right back" But before he could run into the forest, thirty hooded figures in white robes surrounded him. One of them had Armelle by the hair. "How dare you...", Kendyll advanced towards his wife's attacker but he was stopped suddenly by one of the others. He looked down at his feet, he had been bound to where he stood. "There's no need for aggression." the man hissed, "we aren't finished with her...yet" The others laugheed. "Why are you doing this? Kendyll cried, "we are not guilty of any crime, we have done no wrong to you or ayone else!" The man in the center of the group stepped forward and grabbed Kendyll by the throat. Through clenched teeth he said, "Not guilty of any crime? Oh but you are, you and your family are avid followers of Shilen. You pollute this land with the teachings of a demon; while we, the followers of Einhasad have to clean up your mess." He cast a spell and sent Kendyll in a heap on the ground. He grabbed him by the neck once more, "You will pay for your wrongdoings, but first you will watch this." The man motioned for Armelle to be freed. She collapsed at the man's feet, unable to stand up. She was bleeding badly from a wound in her side. "Gentlemen, it would be such a waste to just kill her now. Please, have a little fun with her first. When you are done, kill her..." he looked back at Kendyll and Vedette, "and then take care of these two." The man then walked away into the shawdows of the forest.
Vedette watched in horror as these mysterious men de-robed and violated her mother. Armelle fought as best she could, but she was physically beaten to the point of death. She just lay there as the last man finished with her. She watched as her father screamed and begged for his wife to be set free. He cried out to Shilen, begged for her mercy...but none came. All the screaming and the noise seemed to merge into a roar. Vedette covered her ears, but she could still hear her mother and father's screams. She shut her eyes, she couldn't stand the sight of her parents being tortured. She was just waiting for them to get to her. Then, a very strong arm grabbed her from behind and pulled her back into the water. She could hear mumbling and with a sickening jolt, she landed on the carpeted floor in the Temple of Shilen. Vedette scrambled into the corner and put her heaad on her knees and beagn to cry. An unfamiliar voice spoke to her, "There, there little one. It's ok, you're safe now." Vedette looked up to see a dark elven knight, Grand Master Brecson to be exact, smiling softly at her.
Vedette sat in the cozy room alone while Brecson and Tetrarch Thifiell were speaking in the next room. She couldn't really understand what they were saying, but she could make out pieces of their conversation.
"Sir, I insist you let me take a group back out there, this is our land we should be defending it!"
"No, they would slaughter anyone you took out there. We will wait until midnight to go look for the remains of her parents, but no one goes after those men. Is that understood?"
"Yes sir. Tetrarch, do you believe this is the doing of the church?"
"No, Brecson, I believe it's a separate cult. A self-righteous group acting under the name of Einhasad so that no one can distinguish them. You know as well as I that the church fears "the followers of Shilen". I think that a group of fanatics is responsible for what happened tonight."
"Humans, sir?"
"Humans, elves, it doesn't matter. We have a serious problem on our hands that needs to be dealt with immediately. Double the guards at the gates. And Brecson?"
"Yes sir?"
"Tell no one of this, I don't want to cause a panic. Clean up the mess, I'll take care of the girl."
The sound of drunken girls and the herds of stupid boys chasing after them awoke Vedette from the horrid memory she was reliving in her dreams. Giran was always such a noisy and restless place. "Never settle for convience," she thought to herself. She walked over to the window and pulled it open so she could see the street. So many people were still making a feeble attempt at selling their goods, but no one was out shopping at this hour. Vedette shook her head and leaned up against the window. The chilly night air wrapped itself around her, but she didn't mind. She closed her eyes and embraced the soothing feeling, feeling competely relaxed for the first time in what felt like a century. She opened her eyes, and for whatever reason, felt the need to look across the street. There, in the ally between the blacksmith shop and someone's can hall, was a hooded figure. Dressed all in white, with elaborate gold trim was the nightmare she thought she'd never see again. She shut her eyes tightly and opened them once more, thinking she had been seeing things. He was still there, and he seemed to be looking at her as well. She squinted as she scanned his robes for...yes! On his left shoulder there was the mark, this was one of them! Vedette grabbed her dagger and jumped out of the second floor window, there was no time for the stairs. The figure did not run from her, he didn't move at all. She ran as fast as she could until she got to the allyway. They now stood twenty feet apart. Vedette glared at the man, her hand gripped tightly around her dagger. She could feel the rage building up inside her like the fires from hell. "This is my moment, this is what I've been waiting for. Kill him, kill him now before he does the same thing to you," she thought to herself. The man did not remove his hood, but the moonlight allowed her to see his mouth. He was smirking, smirking! After a long silence, the man spoke, "So, you are alive. I must admit, I'm surprised. I thought that surely we had cleaned up our mess...but obviously I was wrong." He watched her hand tighten around her dagger. She gripped it so tightly her gray skin had turned white. "I'd put that away if I were you. You and I both know you can't kill me, you lack the skills to do so. But an attempt at such a foolish act would surely land you in the dungeon. The church has eyes everywhere Vedette." She looked at him in shock, "You know my name?" she asked. The man laughed, "Ha! Of course I know your name. You didn't think you could waltz into OUR town unnoticed did you? But a word to the wise my dear, don't get too comfortable. Not that it matters really, we'll be tying up loose ends soon enough. You'll soon be taken care of, just like your parents. Sleep tight". And after speaking those jagged words, he muttered a spell and disappeared in a stunning display of blue light. Vedette stood there in the dark, wearing almost nothing, completely shocked at the fact that she didn't take her revenge when she had the chance. Her dagger fell from her hand and clanged very loudly on the cobblestone allyway. She dropped to her knees and burst into silent sobs. A few nosey, and drunken onlookers peered into the ally to see what all the commotion was about. Vedette reached for her dagger and looked up into the night. "I swear by my blood and the blood of my family, I will get my revenge. Shilen, grant me the power and the courage to destroy those hypocritic followers of Einhasad. Let me feel their blood in my hands, let me watch as they beg for your mercy, let me take back what is mine" As she looked down, she realized she had been holding her dagger so tightly she cut her hand. She watched as the blood dripped down onto the cold stone. And for the first time in her life, she could truly feel Shilen's prescence within her. She picked herself up, and made her way back to the inn. The time had come...for revenge.
