Drevan sat by the warm low fire. It was a cool evening and he was searing some bear meat from a recent kill. He sat contemplating the recent months of his life... Never had he had so much responsibility, so many to look after and protect... He was glad he was in this position, but it was not long ago when he had feared all would be lost...
***********************************************
It was near midnight... Drevan's family had long gone to bed for the evening as their was to be a rather large feast the next day.. His father was just a mere merchant in the local market of his village, but he had saved for months to be able to provide such a large meal. The excitement of the next day kept Drevan up most of the night.
The next day was full of much fun and enjoyment as Drevan got to see many relatives he had never met before... It was the first family get together in nearly 40 years. Nearly 15 from the house Renor Drathir had shown... he had not been born yet when the last reunion took place. This is where he met his uncle Aerius. Aerius was a famed warrior in the army of the Tetriarch, and had many stories to tell that day.
Later that night Drevan lay awake on his bed... staring up at the moon through the open window of his room. When a shadow moving across his view startled him. A loud crash could be heard followed by the distinct sound of orders being given to a group of thugs.
This was the 6th attack this month in the small group of villages in northwestern Aden. Unfortunately nothing good had come from these attacks and Drevan knew all too well the outcome... death
All rooms in the house had access to the attic as it was just a one story building, and Drevan knew if he had any chance at all to survive he had to make it to the attic unseen. He silently scampered up the rope ladder and pulled it quickly up after him... He heard the sounds of his family being gathered together in the center of the main room. The ceiling was constructed of loose boards and from the attic one could peer through the cracks in the boards down into the house. He hurried to a spot and from his vantage point he could see 5 tall men clothed in black and donning masks gathering his family up. He heard the leader speak in a quick and harsh voice... "who lives in the room at the end of the hall?" Drevan full knowing he was referring to HIS room. Drevan's father was a smart man and must have figured what his son had done so he lied... "It is a guest room"... "Lies" said the leader. Drevan's father could only reply "We had a reunion today and many were in and out of the room all day taking naps. We have not had the energy to remake the bed as of yet."
The next few long minutes will replay in Drevan's mind for the rest of his long life. His father, mother, and two sisters were brutally murdered right before his eyes. With his Father's last breath he said "bel'la udossta kaas ussta dalharuk". He had only wished he was older, that he could have done something, that he even knew how to wield a strong sword... His wish would come true, but not soon enough to save his family.
He knew he must do something to protect himself and only knew one man who could teach him, Aerius...
